He took up his first post as assistant GP in the Lockwood practice, where he worked until his retirement in 2002 and was known to be a kind and dedicated doctor. In 1975 he attended the Nuffield Course for course organisers in general practice education. In 1976 he became a tutor on the same course and was appointed course organiser for Kirklees, later changed to Huddersfield, a post he held until 1991, when he became joint associate adviser in general practice, supervising postgraduate education and vocational training in the Yorkshire region until 2000. All this was undertaken alongside full time work as a GP.
